The Practice

Conversations between the ages

We are architects and multi-disciplinary designers. From our London studio, we work on a handful of projects that take us from town to country to coastline. Intricately tailored and high performing, the spaces we create are thoughtful environments that enrich people’s lives.

We seek challenge and possibility. From new beginnings to the rehabilitation of neglect, we are known for our way of combining heritage buildings with the contemporary, orchestrating a conversation between the ages. Working with great care and affection, we are always mindful that uniting past with present is a privilege, as well as a balancing act, that takes time, skill and understanding.

Driven by detail, we work with a rigour that demands our design decisions have clear purpose and justification. Projects are often defined by unique historical, cultural or geographical situations and constraints, which, for us, act as catalysts for vision and creativity. Collaborating with trusted craftspeople and makers when required, our projects are designed as a whole. There’s a coherent aesthetic that runs through every space – external and internal, macro and micro.

There’s a tectonic quality to our work, a clarity to how materials and structures come together, and to how buildings are made. The result is a visual story, a tapestry that threads a design language between old and new, delicate and dramatic.

Our environmental and cultural legacy is important. We advocate how traditional building techniques and natural, breathable materials can be combined with sustainable technologies to create healthy, considerate buildings that consume less energy. Where we can, we adapt and re-use existing buildings and materials to help reimagine and safeguard their future.

We understand that designing a new building, or significantly changing an existing one, is a pivotal experience, and so our process is one of unwavering collaboration. We offer a complete design and delivery service, from architecture and interiors to the pieces within. Our founder, Will, is closely involved, working alongside a team that delivers a level of design and service that goes beyond the norm. This approach enables us to create highly personal, deeply considered and notable work: places that express our clients’ character and are intrinsic to their wellbeing.

I think this is beautiful, this place. I think it’s beautiful because of the way that it manages two quite competing agendas. One is the historical approach, where everything is conserved and repaired, and there is so much detail there's a danger of it being engulfed by fiddly twiddle.

And the other approach, where the modern is introduced, which can threaten the old, it can be blisteringly aggressive. But here, well, this building treads a fine golden line between them, and the result is something quite delicate, quite romantic in fact.

Miles joined Will Gamble in 2018, shortly after its inception, and has been key in helping develop the studio into the award-winning practice it is today. As an Associate, he leads projects from early concept through to on-site delivery, with a strong focus on turning ideas into reality. Miles is passionate about the design and delivery process, working closely with clients, consultants, and suppliers to achieve tailored, high-quality outcomes. His calm and considered approach brings clarity and confidence to what is often a deeply personal journey for clients. Notable projects include Flint Farm, Pippy Oak, and Butterfly House.

Tom Southall

Architect

Tom joined Will Gamble in 2023 and has experience across all stages of the design and construction process. His collaborative and measured approach makes him particularly effective at managing complex projects during construction, where he works closely with contractors to achieve the highest standards. Tom has a strong aptitude for technical detailing and resolution, which underpins the precision and quality of his work. Before joining the studio, he gained experience in both Bristol and London specialising in a range of private residential projects. Tom was instrumental in delivering The Island, a complex project due to its geographical, cultural and historical constraints.

Jack Guilfoyle

Architect

Jack joined Will Gamble in 2023 and brings experience across a variety of residential and cultural projects. His work spans all stages of design development, with a focus on using context as a source of inspiration and research as a driver for design. Jack’s meticulous and thoughtful approach allows him to create original design responses that are both carefully developed and clearly articulated. Before joining the studio, he studied architecture in Bristol and London and went on to work at Stonewood Design on projects across the UK. Jack was part of the team that designed and delivered the Grade II listed Flint Farm.

Zara Cowen

Interior Designer and Procurement Lead

Zara has worked with Will Gamble since 2022 and is the studio’s interiors, and procurement lead. She trained at the Inchbald School of Design and has over a decade of experience delivering high-end residential projects across the UK and Europe. She specialises in sourcing and specifying loose furniture as well as overseeing product procurement. Working closely with clients, architects, designers and suppliers, Zara ensures that interior elements are seamlessly integrated into the wider design vision. Her expertise lies in uniting architecture, interiors and furniture into a cohesive whole.

Holly Crone

Architectural Assistant

Holly joined Will Gamble with experience in interior design and has previously worked on commercial projects for clients across the City of London. She studied at Liverpool and Kingston University, where she developed a clear and practical approach to designing well-considered and quietly characterful spaces. Holly supports the studio across both architecture and interiors, contributing to projects from early concept through to detailed delivery.

Annabel Taylor

Architectural Assistant

Annabel joined Will Gamble with experience working on historic buildings and a particular interest in how contemporary design can sit comfortably alongside historic fabric. She has a strong appreciation for materials, craft, carpentry, and the value of good workmanship, which continues to inform her approach.
