When asked to extend, reconfigure and refurbish this semi-detached property in southwest London, we were led by the concept of soft minimalism. A sweeping staircase lies at the heart of the house: its turned oak handrail reaches all the way to the top in a gentle curve, resting on slender white metal spindles. Above, a curved oval rooflight floods the floorplan with natural light.

The curve motif is continued with the use of archways throughout, from a luminous window seat to elegant recessed niches. Two materials are placed centre stage: pippy oak, chosen for its distinctive mottled grain, and the bold marble that characterises the bathrooms. Elsewhere we turned to a restrained palette of muted colours, natural materials and seamless microcement finishes, to celebrate these materials and create a sense of calm. In the master bedroom, the feature headboard showcases the pippy oak’s leopard skin pattern, providing additional storage while separating the central sleeping area from the en-suite bathroom. Bespoke joinery maintains a consistent aesthetic across the rest of the property.

At roof level, we added a rear mansard and pod extension to accommodate three new bedrooms. A home automation system discreetly conceals switches for an uncluttered minimalist decor, while thermal upgrades to walls, floors and roofs ensure comfort and sustainability.

ClientProfessional, personable, reliable and very talented. We have done a few projects with different architects, we would only use Will Gamble Architects in the future. We are extremely pleased and impressed with the outcome and would highly recommend.
