When refurbishing this double-fronted Victorian house for a young family and their dog, Millie, we introduced a spacious two storey rear addition, with an open-plan ground floor living area, and a new bedroom to the first floor.
Vertical fins frame the rear façade, creating a sense of rhythm while remaining in conversation with the historic character of the house.
The colour palette throughout is lean and sophisticated, combining a chocolate-brown fumed oak floor with bronze embellishments and Calacatta Symphony marble, its brown vein echoing the warm tones of the oak floor. A green velvet banquette in the dining area brings the natural colours of the garden into the property; outside, we created a dining terrace overlooking silver birch trees and a grassy expanse. The kitchen joinery features subtle beaded detailing around the doors and the drawer fronts.
To accommodate the client’s home working needs, we installed a desk area which can be concealed through a set of pocket doors. A key design cue came from the reception room’s original feature of delicate moulded panelling. We brought this framed motif into the addition at first floor through its fins, as well as the beading detail to the joinery, which are more deliberately contemporary in appearance.
At first floor, we created a guest bedroom and master ensuite with joinery that encloses a window seat, while in the bathroom area, soft, calm materials are paired with microcement for a seamless finish that allows the space to function as a wet room.
The result is a warm and consistent home where traditional elements and contemporary design are balanced sympathetically through the simple act of framing.
