Once reserved for temples and courts, colonnades are an imposing feature of classical architecture: rows of columns adding a sense of prestige, symmetry and rhythm to a building. We approached the refurbishment of this semi-detached home in Croydon with a modern reimagining of the concept: deep angular fins finished in thinly applied microcement, reprising the rough cast render of the local vernacular.

Between these fins, floor-to-ceiling glazing and large pivot doors provide direct access to the rear garden. Interior and exterior spaces converse with one another through the continued use of microcement and rich walnut slats in the bespoke kitchen, its cabinetry made from black valchromat. The multigenerational ground floor space encloses a dark snug, providing a sense of intimacy within the open plan living arrangement. Polished concrete floors throughout create a seamless look, with natural timber flooring extending into the upper floors for a sense of continuity.

To celebrate the history of the building, we attentively reintroduced the traditional mouldings to the formal reception room and the loft, where we created the master en-suite. Within the rear dormer, a hideaway desk and window seat provides dramatic views of the surrounding townscape. The dormer’s deep angled reveals are finished in red zinc, a contemporary interpretation of the red clay tiles that clad the original roof form. A sculptural bathtub and walk-in wardrobe add to the master suite’s lavish feel.

ClientAbsolutely thrilled with the outstanding work by Will Gamble Architects on our recent house renovation project. From conceptualisation to completion, Will demonstrated exceptional professionalism, creativity and attention to detail. They seamlessly blended modern design elements with our traditional home, creating a space that perfectly suits our lifestyle. The end result exceeded our expectations.
